It is true that this nation has just recently witnessed another mass shooting in a school, but we’re not going to write this article with that specific shooting in mind. For one, there are those that are still grieving and they get to grieve at the pace and manner of their choosing.
The other reason that we are not going to write this article from the perspective of that tragedy is because the left’s response to any mass tragedy involving guns never changes. They roll out the same old script at every opportunity and they rarely ever deviate.
That’s because the left never let a tragedy go to waste in their relentless campaign to take our guns. To them, each tragedy is simply another opportunity. So, we’re going to write this article to address their consistent canned response and you can simply roll this article back out to refute them when they follow their same predictable path.
Gun Control Logic Is Fatally Flawed, But The Left Doesn’t Care
Whenever there is a tragedy involving guns, gun control advocates are quick to call for more gun control measures. They argue that more laws will make it more difficult for criminals and other dangerous individuals to obtain firearms. They say that background checks, waiting periods, and other measures will keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them.
However, this knee-jerk reaction ignores some basic facts. For one, criminals and other dangerous individuals are not likely to obey gun control laws. They are, by definition, lawbreakers. They obtain guns through illegal means, such as theft, straw purchases, or the black market. Namely, gun control only impedes the law abiding citizen.
In addition, gun control measures can have unintended consequences. For example, waiting periods may make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to obtain guns for self-defense. Just ask any woman who needed immediate protection from an estranged romantic partner and wound up dead for lack of that defense. The Second Amendment Was As Important As The First Amendment To Our Founders
The left likes to make the 2nd Amendment seem like an ancient relic when, in reality, the founders made it number 2 on the list for a reason. They knew what they were doing.
One of the main reasons why championing gun control after every tragedy is wrong is that it goes against our constitutional rights. The Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms. This right was put in place by our Founding Fathers for a reason.
When gun control advocates call for more gun control after every tragedy, they are essentially saying that our constitutional rights are not important. They are suggesting that we should be willing to give up our rights for the sake of preventing gun violence.

What the left doesn’t like to mention is that the Constitution provides a mechanism to change that right. They just think that path is too hard and they know they don’t have the support to do it.

Another reason why championing gun control after every tragedy is wrong is that it ignores the failure of gun control measures. We've seen time and again that gun control measures do not necessarily lead to a decrease in gun violence.
In fact, some of the cities with the strictest gun control laws in the country, such as Chicago and Washington D.C., have some of the highest rates of gun violence.
This is because gun control measures often only affect law-abiding citizens. Criminals will still find ways to obtain guns. Gun control measures also make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves against violent criminals.
The criminals know that it is too hard for the average citizen to obtain guns in these “gun free” zones and they prey upon them as a result. Which is why remind all the citizenry that there are faster methods than 911 to defend yourself against such monsters.
The Real Solution: Addressing the Root Causes of Gun Violence
Instead of championing gun control after every tragedy, we should focus on addressing the root causes of gun violence. This includes improving mental health care, addressing poverty and inequality, and reducing gang violence.
It also means enforcing the laws that are already on the books and improving our background check system to ensure that those who are prohibited from owning guns cannot obtain them.
In conclusion, it is wrong to champion gun control after every tragedy with guns. This knee-jerk reaction ignores important facts, goes against our constitutional rights, and fails to address the root causes of gun violence.
Instead, we should focus on addressing the real issues that lead to gun violence and enforcing the laws that are already in place. We should not be willing to give up our constitutional rights for the sake of preventing gun violence.
